Steering system (1) comprises an electrical adjusting unit (5) connected to a calculating/control unit (6), a controllable valve arrangement (7) for controlling a hydraulic stream flowing through the hydraulic steering gear (2) and an acquisition unit (8) for acquiring driving-specific parameters and feeding to the calculating/control unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a steering system. Preferred Features: The driving-specific parameters are vehicle speed, acceleration, steering wheel angle and/or steering wheel angle speed. The controllable valve arrangement is a stop valve. A bypass line (9) branches in front of the valve arrangement in the flow direction and is connected to a hydraulic reservoir (10).
