A medical implant device or component thereof comprises a metal substrate, an intermediate coating, and an outer coating of aluminium oxide. The device or component can be made by a method which involves applying an intermediate coating of a material other than aluminium oxide to the substrate surface, and depositing an outer coating of aluminium oxide by physical vapour deposition on to at least a portion of the intermediate coating.
