Circular articles 16 are rotatably held on a rotatable platen 12 by frame members 17 which at least partially embrace the articles and are adapted to be adjusted relatively to the platen. The members 17 are fitted with rollers 20, 21 to engage the articles and have slots 23 through which pass bolts 22 to secure them to a ring 25 attached to the frame of the machine. Guides at each side of the members 17 allow the latter to be adjusted rectilinearly towards and away from the platen. The articles or rings 16 have inner and outer diameters somewhat smaller and greater, respectively, than the radial dimensions of the platen. These rings may be used as holders for small articles to be lapped, and in this case they serve to keep the abrading face true. A tank 11 supplies abrading compound to the platen which has radial slots 14 to carry away excess abrasive and detritus. The surface of the platen may have any desired contour.
