A closure device for an artificial rectum comprises an inflatable rubber bladder connected by a tubular neck to a bottom plate which rests against the outside of the abdomen, the plate being provided with a recess against which an inflating means can be brought with sealing engagement. The base plate 4 has a neck 3 and semi-elastic tubular extension 2 enclosed in the neck of a rubber bladder 1. A spring-loaded ball valve 7 closes the air inlet 5a. After insertion, the bladder is inflated by means of a bulb fitted with a rubber nozzle which is pressed tightly against the recess in the plug 5. When it is desired to deflate the bladder the ball valve 7 is lifted off its seating by a narrow extension fitted to the inflating nozzle or by any other.thin rod. An alternative valve arrangement is also described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown).
