<p>According to the invention, weight-sensitive resistance elements of a sensor seat mat (21) are connected to one another across various networks (3, 4, 6). An evaluation unit (7) determines whether a network (3, 4, 5, 6) is occupied (1) or unoccupied (0). The occupancy of a vehicle seat (2) by a vehicle occupant (11) is identified from a combination of occupied and unoccupied networks (3, 4, 5, 6) and if necessary, the firing of occupant protection means (14) for protecting the identified vehicle occupant (11) is adapted.
