<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lateral electric field mode liquid crystal device whose viewing angle characteristics are improved. <P>SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal device 100, retardation values of a retardation plate 25 and a liquid crystal layer 50 are equal to each other, and the slow axis of the retardation plate 25 and the initial aligning direction of the liquid crystal are nearly vertical to each other. The sum (NzR+NzLC) of an Nz value represented by formula (1): Nz=(nx-nz)/¾nx-ny¾ of the retardation plate 25 (NzR) and that of the liquid crystal layer 50 (NzLC) is nearly 1 (in the formula, nx, ny, and nz are three-dimensional refractive indexes of a retardation plate, nx is the refractive index in the slow axis direction, ny is the refractive index in a direction parallel to the plate surface and normal to the slow axis, and nz is the refractive index in the plate thickness direction). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
