The system (100) has a biometric system (110) for determining biometric data of a domestic animal, where the biometric system has an illuminating unit (111) for partially illuminating a room area, which is monitored using a camera unit (110a). The illuminating unit is attached to the camera unit, and radiates electromagnetic waves in a spectral range, where the illuminating unit has a scanner, such as laser scanner, for scanning the room area, and a memory unit (120) stores the biometric data. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an identification system for an animal.
