INITIALIZATION DEVICE AND INITIALIZATION METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an initialization device and an initialization method to perform a stable focus control. SOLUTION: The initialization device initializes a recording medium while performing a focus control upon receiving the reflection light from the recording medium with an optical detector by irradiating the recording medium with a long elliptical laser beam extending in a track direction. When the initialization device performs an initialization of a diskoidal recording medium having a recording film whose reflectivity is to be increased before and after the initialization process while moving the laser spot from the inner peripheral side to the outer peripheral side of the disk, the optical detector performs a focus control using reflection light reflected more from the inner peripheral side in a radial direction of the recording medium within the long elliptical laser spot than from the outer peripheral side.
