PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator and an image projector using the same, wherein increase in the light utilization ratio and decrease in a change in intensity of illumination light are attained. SOLUTION: An illuminator includes at least two light-emitting diodes (LEDs) capable of being driven in a flashing manner to output illumination light beams; a polarization converter unit configured to match the polarization directions of the illumination light beams emitted from the at least two LEDs and output illumination light beams; a liquid crystal cell configured to receive the illumination light beams outputted from the polarization converter unit; and a control unit configured to control, in synchronization, the liquid crystal cell and the LEDs so as to intermittently drive the LEDs and substantially continuously output illumination light beams from the liquid crystal cell.
