PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that it is sometimes difficult to recognize display content depending on the display content or an article disposed behind a transparent display since characters or an image displayed on the transparent display is seen overlapping the article disposed behind the display, and when the display is used outdoors, visibility of the image becomes worse depending on conditions of the intensity and incidence angle of external light. SOLUTION: A display device is equipped with: a first display panel which switches between a display state and a non-display state for each pixel; a second display panel superposed on the back of the first display panel; and a control means for controlling the display state of the second display panel. The first display panel has such an image display function that pixels emit light in the display state and are transparent in the non-display state, the second display panel has a means for varying light transmissivity for each area, and the control means has a means for controlling the display state of the first display panel and the light transmissivity of the second display panel.
