The unit has a turbocharger with a compressor and a turbine arranged on a common shaft, and an electric machine i.e. synchronous machine with sensorless regulation, arranged on the shaft between the compressor and the turbine. The machine has a rotor fastened to the shaft and a stator surrounding the rotor. The machine has two galvanically independent 3-phase subsystem with redundant characteristics, which includes a motor winding and associated electronics, and for operating in normal operation. The machine has a 6-phase subsystem, operating in case of failure of the two 3-phase subsystems.
