A scanning display apparatus having an optical modulator and a method for setting a light source profile are provided to improve image quality by adjusting the amount of incident light from a light source. An optical modulator(120) modulates incident light according to an inputted driving signal and outputs modulated light corresponding to a one-dimensional image. A driving circuit(125) converts an inputted image control signal to the driving signal and outputs the driving signal to the optical modulator. A scanner(130) displays a two-dimensional image by scanning the modulated light on a screen. A light source(110) irradiates incident light to the optical modulator. A light source driver(350) adjusts the amount of incident light according to a light source control signal. A projection control unit applies the light source control signal corresponding to a light source profile to the light source driver, and applies the image control signal to the driving circuit.
