<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite optical element made small-sized/thin by joining and integrating a base material side optical element to a molding side optical element with an optical thin film interposed on the joining boundary, and a method of manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: A base material lens 22 is selected from optical glass in which a softening temperature is higher than that of a molding lens 124 and the difference of thermal linear expansion coefficient between base material lens 22 and the molding lens 124 is within 3.0×10<SP>-6</SP>/°C. The optical thin film 123 is formed from a thin film comprising optically transparent MgO and has a softening point higher than that of the molding lens 124.
