Conjugated diolefin hydrocarbons are polymerized in an inert hydrocarbon medium (optionally with monoolefin comonomers) by contact with a catalyst consisting of the clear supernatant material produced by reaction in an inert hydrocarbon medium of an anhydrous Co11 or Co111 Compound and a Group I-III organometallic compound. Preferably the degree of dehydration of the Co compound is at least that achieved by an efficient azeotropic distillation in toluene. The examples describe the preparation of generally cis-1:4 polybutadiene and polyisoprene, as well as copolymers of butadiene with styrene, isobutylene, butene-2, 2-methylbutene-2 and isoprene, using catalysts prepared from components selected from cobaltous chloride, hexahydrophthalate, naphthenate, octoate and 2-ethylexoate; and i-Bu3Al, i-BuAlCl2, EtAlCl2, i-Bu2AlCl, MeAlCl2, Me2AlCl and mixtures of such alkylaluminium mono- and di-chlorides including the sesquichlorides. Many other suitable diene monomers and catalyst components are listed in the Specification. Belgian Specification 534,792 also is referred to.
