PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance coin sorting method and identification device with compact, inexpensive and simple configuration. SOLUTION: The identification device is equipped with a coin passage through which the coin passes, a first coil arranged at one side part of the coin passage, a second coil which is electromagnetically coupled with and facing the first coil and arranged at the other side part of the coin passage, and an oscillation circuit for outputting a sinusoidal signal for exciting the first coil, and identifies the coin based on the signal outputted from the second coil.
