A catalyst that can produce ethylene oxide in a high selectivity is provided, and a method for producing ethylene oxide using the catalyst is provided. A catalyst for producing ethylene oxide is prepared by supporting a catalyst component on a carrier which contains alpha-alumina as a principal component, and in which at least two peaks are present in a pore diameter range of 0.01-100 mum and at least one peak of the two peaks is present in a pore diameter range of 0.01-1.0 mum in the pore distribution measured by mercury pressing method. A method for producing ethylene oxide comprises the step of subjecting ethylene to a vapor phase oxidation using a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of the catalyst for producing ethylene oxide. Further, a specific surface area of the carrier is 0.03 to 10m^2/g.
