An image pickup apparatus and a method for controlling the same are provided to respond to the brightness change of an object immediately without delay of an AE(Auto Exposure) mode, when a photographing operation is performed at a slow shutter rate, thereby obtaining a stable image. An image pickup apparatus comprises an image pickup element(120), a diaphragm, a shutter, a diaphragm-controlling unit(104), a shutter rate-controlling unit, an amplifier for amplifying an output signal of the image pickup element, a signal-processing unit(114) for processing the output signal of the image pickup element to output image data, and an external sensor(107). The external sensor senses a brightness of an object as external brightness information, during a sense period set to be shorter than a sampling period of the image pickup element. When a rate of the shutter is set to be longer than a predetermined period, an exposure degree is controlled by using the external brightness information.
