A mobile messenger service system for displaying the state information of messenger counterparts on phonebooks and a method thereof are provided to enable the user of a mobile terminal to confirm each counterpart's state information through the phonebook and to select desired counterparts directly on the phonebook in executing various communications. A mobile messenger service system comprises a mobile terminal(110), a phonebook keeping server(150) and a presence server(130). The mobile terminal contains an IMS(IP multimedia Subsystem)-based phonebook. The phonebook keeping server, synchronized with the mobile terminal, receives and stores phonebook information. The presence server acquires user information, stored in the phonebook of the mobile terminal, from the phonebook keeping server, confirms state information for the acquired user information, and transmits the confirmed state information to the mobile terminal. The mobile terminal displays the transmitted state information at an associated user field of the phonebook.
