The detector (60) has a detector subsystem (68) outputting electrical signals in response to reception of X-rays, and a single-piece protective enclosure (62) with an opening to receive the subsystem. A portion of the enclosure is made of material e.g. metal or metal alloy or carbon fiber reinforced plastic material, having low X-ray attenuation characteristics. Corner or edge caps are arranged on respective corners, edges or a portion of respective edges of the enclosure. Layers of compressible material (78) are arranged on portions of an inner surface of the enclosure to hold the subsystem. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing an X-ray detector.
