Disclosed is an exhaust gas purifying catalyst with excellent catalytic performance, wherein the amount of a noble metal used therefor is suppressed. Specifically disclosed is an exhaust gas purifying catalyst (1) comprising a catalyst base (3) and catalyst coating layers (5, 7) formed on the catalyst base (3). The catalyst coating layers (5, 7) have a layered structure including an inner layer (5) containing Pd (a-1), Pt (a-2) and an inorganic oxide (a-3), and an outer layer (7) containing a noble metal (b-1) and an inorganic oxide (b-2). A part of the inorganic oxide (a-3) is loaded with Pd and Pt in such an amount that the weight ratio Pd/Pt is within the range of 8-12, and another part of the inorganic oxide (a-3) is loaded with Pd and Pt in such an amount that the weight ratio Pd/Pt is within the range of 4-6 or within the range of 18-22.
