PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an assembly type cam shaft having a tube shaft and a plurality of cams each having one penetrating opening, wherein the cams are fitted onto the tube shaft, and fixed in position on the tube shaft by being spaced apart from each other, and the tube shaft has a sideward indentation deformation part deformed inward among a plurality of constituent members to allow the fitted adjacent constituent members to be installed on the tube shaft by further reducing the distance between them with sufficient depth of the sideward indentation deformation part kept; and to provide a method for manufacturing the cam shaft. SOLUTION: At least partial parts of the indentation deformation parts 21, 22 and 23 are made to reach the lower side of at least one of the constituent members 16, 29, 30 and 31; first the constituent members are fixed in position on the tube shaft 12 by high-pressure internal deformation of the tube shaft 12, that is, cold deformation; and then the indentation deformation parts 21, 22 and 23 are arranged on the tube shaft 12.
