PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a variable air gap rotary electric machine wherein even when the rotational speed suddenly changes, the air gap of the rotary electric machine can be quickly adjusted and its rotor can be reduced in weight. SOLUTION: The rotor 2 is installed on the rotor shaft 1 of the rotary electric machine so that it can be relatively moved in the axial direction but not in the circumferential direction. Cam members 8, 10 that are expanded and contracted stepwise in the axial direction are attached to the rotor 2. The cam members 8, 10 are cylindrical members having multiple saw tooth-like protrusions 11, 12, different in height in the axial direction, disposed in the circumferential direction. The protrusions 11, 12 of the two cam members 8, 10 are engaged with each other in the axial direction, and one 8 of the cam members is coupled with the rotor 2. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
