PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more effectively prevent occurrence of air bubbles in the surface of oil in an oil pan without depending on a baffle plate. SOLUTION: A large amount of oil flowing down from a cylinder head through first and second oil return paths 25, 26 after being supplied to lubricate a valve system for inlet and exhaust camshafts, a large amount of oil flowing down from a cylinder block 12 through third to fifth oil return paths 27, 28, 29 after being supplied to cool pistons, a small amount of oil flowing down through the oil return paths after being supplied to lubricate respective journal portions of the inlet and exhaust camshafts, and a small amount of oil flowing down through the oil return paths after being supplied to lubricate respective journal portions of a crankshaft, pass around the periphery of a balance shaft housing 41. A wire mesh buffer member 52 for reducing the speed of the oil so as to return the oil to the oil pan is arranged in the whole area between the periphery of the balance shaft housing 41 and a flange portion 19a of the oil pan 19.
