A robot cleaner and a method for controlling thereof are provided to detect the range of an overlapped signal by installing plural sensor units for detecting an obstacle separated from a case. A robot cleaner comprises a case(100) including an air suction device discharging air in the lower part of the case to the outside of the case, a passage sucking external air, a suction nozzle unit having an agitator floating dirt on the bottom, and a collection device. The case consists of sensors for detecting the distance between the wall and the obstacle, a bumper for absorbing shock, and left/right driving wheels. The sensor units(200-270) are installed inside the case to detect the obstacle separated from the case. The sensor units also have a transmitting part for transmitting a signal, and a receiving part for receiving the signal reflected from the obstacle.
