A magnetic detecting element comprising a pinned magnetic layer 4 with a fixed magnetization direction, a free magnetic layer 6, at least in part formed from a nickel, iron and "other element" alloy (NiFeX), where the other element is selected from Cu, Sc, Ti, Zn, Zr, Hf, Au, Ag, Mn and Al and has an average ratio composition of between 5 and 20 atomic percent. A nonmagnetic layer 5 is positioned between the free magnetic layer and pinned magnetic layer. Also claimed is a magnetic detecting element with an antiferromagnetic layer 3 which sets the magnetic direction of the pinned layer. Preferably there may be two pinned layers 4 8 either side of the free magnetic layer 6, with two non magnetic layers 5 7, and two antiferromagnetic layers 3 9. Preferably X is copper. Also disclosed is a method for manufacturing the element using diffusion and thermal treatment. |
