<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar lighting device which emits light of uniform luminance without unevenness of luminance from a light emitting face. <P>SOLUTION: The planar lighting device comprises a lighting device main body 14 having a light guide plate 18 for converting the light from a light source 12 arranged at the outer periphery side into planar light and a case 16 in which the light source 12 and the lighting device main body 14 are housed. The case 16 is provided with a case main body 16a in which the lighting device main body 14 is housed and a frame-like case 16b which is insertion engaged with the case main body 16a so as to cover the outer peripheral edge of the light emitting face of the light guide plate 16.
