The method involves controlling a surface temperature of a continuous flow heater (1) on maintaining a target temperature, and switching on the heater when the target temperature falls below. A determination parameter corresponding to an average heating power received from the heater is determined during measuring intervals. The heating power corresponding to the determined parameter is compared with a target heating power. A calcification signal is produced if the determined parameter corresponding to the average heating power falls below the target heating power at a given value. An independent claim is also included for an electrical device for monitoring the calcification condition of an electrically heated continuous flow heater in a coffee machine.
