PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a remote controller which can substitute for the function of a button in which failure is detected. SOLUTION: The remote controller 100 comprises an input section 210 receiving input of operation, a control section 220 generating a signal for controlling the operation of a controlled apparatus, a section 240 for storing data, a section 250 for originating a control signal, and a display section 260 for displaying an image. The control section 220 comprises a control signal generating section 221, a section 222 for switching the operation mode of the remote controller 100, a section 223 for detecting a failure occurring in the remote controller 100 by detecting an electric signal generated from the control section 220, a section 224 generating constitution achieving a function alternative to the function in which a failure is detected, and a display control section 225 for making a display indicative of that function to be presented at the display section 260.
