<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink residual amount detecting method for correctly optically detecting a residual amount of ink which is made of an insoluble material such as pigment ink. <P>SOLUTION: The ink residual amount detecting method is provided for detecting whether or not the residual amount of ink in an ink container 15 is equal to or less than a predetermined level by an optically detecting means. The ink stored in the ink container 15 is made of a dispersed material obtained by dispersing the insoluble material having insolubility to a solvent.
