<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a welding apparatus which effectively sucks weld fumes without having an adverse effect on the shielding function of shielding gas in the case of welding an abutted portion mainly in manufacturing a small diameter welded steel pipe. <P>SOLUTION: The welding apparatus for manufacturing the welded steel pipe is used for welding the inside surface of the pipe at the abutted portion by MIG or MAG welding method while sucking the weld fumes generated in welding when the welded steel pipe is manufactured. Fume suction ports 31a for sucking the weld fumes are arranged on both right and left sides of a welding torch 13 so as to face to the nearly upward direction to suck the weld fumes which rise from the welding portion and collide with the ceiling surface in the pipe, and then descend along the right and left inside wall surfaces. The downward flow of the shielding gas discharged from the welding torch 13 is not disturbed by the suction of the fumes because the fume suction ports 31a face the upward direction.
