The method involves determining operating time of acoustic signals (13, 16), using a sensor circuit and determining a distance measuring signal. The acoustic signal (13) with signal parameters suitable for close-up range measurements (12) and the acoustic signal (16) with the signal parameters suitable for far field measurements (15) are transmitted. The acoustic signal (13) has low amplitude and is of shorter duration and the acoustic signal (16) has high amplitude and is of longer duration. An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing distance measurements with the help of sound.
