AN OPTICAL POINTING DEVICE AND PERSONAL MOBILE PHONE AVAILABLE TO POINT AND INPUT LETTERS

A personal portable terminal having optical pointing device capable of inputting and pointing characters is provided to enable a user to convert inputted characters detected from the portable terminal into the Korean character or the English alphabet directly on a display screen, while the user can move and select a cursor on a terminal screen by using the user's finger instead of an object in general pointing mode. A user is able to input characters by confirming characters inputted on an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) screen(101) of a portable terminal by directly writing the characters on an object(bottom surface) through light emitted from light sources of optical pointing devices(100,100a) in character input mode of the portable terminal. In pointing mode, the user points the characters by moving a cursor(106) on the LCD screen by moving an object(surface of the user's finger) through the light emitted from the light sources of the optical pointing devices.
