A surface light source (200) includes a plate type light source body having a sealed discharging space (240) formed therein, a plate type electrode unit (250) entirely formed on at least one surface of the light source body, and a multiple voltage applying unit to partition the electrode unit into a plurality of regions and to apply voltages to the respective regions. The electrode unit is partitioned into plural regions and voltages are applied to the regions so that brightness of a surface light source can be partially controlled and a local dimming for a surface light source is realized.
