An image forming apparatus is provided to prevent temperature increase of a fusing device by detecting abnormal operations of a system through hardware, thereby preventing deterioration of fusing device components caused by overheating of the fusing device and increasing lifetime of the fusing device. In an image forming apparatus having a fusing device, the image forming apparatus comprises a power supply unit, a controller, a fixing temperature controller(130), an overheating preventing circuit unit(140) and a fixer. The controller outputs a control signal which controls the driving of each unit in the image forming apparatus. The fixing temperature controller(130) which consists of a switching unit(132) and a temperature control circuit(134) controls the application of source voltage from power supply unit to a heat lamp inside the fixer. The overheating preventing circuit unit comprises an overheating preventing circuit unit(142) and a protection circuit unit(144). The overheating preventing circuit unit compares a surface temperature of the fusing device with an overheating reference temperature and outputs an overheating detection signal. The protection circuit unit compares the overheating detection signal with a reference signal having predetermined electric potential and outputs a fusing device intercepting signal.
