PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a lean mixture from flowing into a center part region to which a rich mixture is supplied when supplying the lean mixture to a combustion chamber through a main intake port. SOLUTION: A stratified combustion type internal combustion engine keeps in a cylinder head 4 a main intake port 11 for supplying a lean mixture to an outer peripheral part region 23 in a combustion chamber 6 defined between a cylinder head 2 and piston 5 so as to give a swirl S1 in a given direction to the lean mixture, an auxiliary intake port 12 for supplying a rich mixture to the center part region 24 in the combustion chamber 6 which an electrode of a spark plug 10 faces, and a main intake valve 18 and auxiliary intake valve 19 for opening/closing respective outlets 7, 8 of these ports 11, 12, wherein a hood part 27 covering in the main intake port 11 a part of an umbrella part 18a in the main intake valve 18 closer to the center part region 24 is protruded on an inner peripheral surface of the outlet 7 of the main intake port 11.
