<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device having excellent operability for inputting characters, and to provide a character input method, a program, and a mechanically readable recording medium with the program recorded thereon. <P>SOLUTION: The device is provided with: character input keys C15 which are less than the number of Japanese "readings" which can be input; a character group table TB which groups a plurality of Japanese "readings" which can be input for each key and stores them; a character group reading control part C2 which in turn reads corresponding characters from the character group table TB on the basis of the kind of the character input key and the number of the times of depressing a key; an under-input buffer C11 which stores read "readings" temporarily; and a reading definition buffer C12 which defines characters in the under-input buffer C11 and stores them.
