A process for the (co)polymerisation of ethylene comprises: (a) preparing a reaction mixture containing ethylene, optionally another olefin, and a catalyst composition, (b) reacting the mixture to obtain polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene; (c) the catalyst composition comprising a catalyst of formula (C5RnH5-n)(L)MXaYb and a trialkyl aluminium cocatalyst. C5RnH5-n = (un)substituted cyclopentadienyl; n = integer 0-5; R = 1-6C alkyl; L = tetrapyrazolyl borate, hydrotrispyrazolyl borate, dihydrobispyrazolyl borate or hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl) borate; M = Group IVB transition metal ; a and b = integers such that a+b = M-2; m = valence of M; X and Y = halogen or a ligand of formula of ER1;E = group VIA element; R1 = 1-6C alkyl or (halogen-substituted) aryl.
