PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element capable of reducing a quantity of ionic impurities in a liquid crystal cell, suppressing the occurrence of a burning phenomenon and obtaining higher image quality, and to provide a projection liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element 10 has a liquid crystal layer 16 held between a pair of substrates 11 and 12 which are stuck with a sealing material 15 so that alignment layers are opposed to each other at prescribed intervals, wherein the content of a photo-radical polymerization initiator is less than 0.05 wt.% based on 100 pts.wt. sealant mother material.
