PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light diffusion film which can efficiently remove luminance irregularity and has both of high uniformity ratio and high luminance characteristics, and to provide a surface light source which unites both characteristics of high luminance and high uniformity ratio and can be used as a novel direct type backlight. SOLUTION: The light diffusion film contains light diffusion elements or air bubbles in the film, wherein the minimum variable angleθ<SB>60min</SB>at incident angle 60°is 12°or more, the maximum variable angleθ<SB>60max</SB>at incident angle 60°is 108°or less and the total thickness of the film is 10μm to 1,000μm.
