PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of searching simply a substance effective for enhancing a skin barrier function, with high accuracy. SOLUTION: The method uses an increasing action of increasing a layering degree of a horny layer cell of a substance to be examined, and/or an increasing action of increasing an appearance degree of subcorneal desmosome structure, as an index for evaluating a skin barrier function increasing action of the substance. In concretely saying, the skin barrier function enhancement action of the substance is evaluated to be increased as the increasing action of layering degree of the horny layer cell of the substance is increased, and the skin barrier function increasing action of the substance is evaluated to be increased as the increasing action of the appearance degree of the subcorneal desmosome structure in the substance is increased. The skin barrier function increasing action of the substance is also evaluated using an increasing action of increasing a layering degree of a horny layer cell of myriocin, and/or an increasing action of increasing an appearance degree of subcorneal desmosome structure thereof, as a reference.
