PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method of a premixed compression self-ignition engine which can be practically used, by shortening an application time and an interruption time of a load by performing compression self-ignition operation using spark ignition. SOLUTION: In the operation method of a premixed compression self-ignition engine, compression self-ignition of air-fuel mixture, which is made by mixing air to fuel in advance, is performed in a combustion chamber so as to burn the air-fuel mixture. A spark ignition device 53 is provided to perform spark ignition of the air-fuel mixture, and an approximately constant intake temperature of the air-fuel mixture is maintained by a temperature control device 35. Depending on the magnitude of a load, switching is performed among spark ignition operation, an auxiliary ignition compression self-ignition operation subsidiarily using spark ignition, and non-ignition compression self-ignition operation not using the spark ignition.
