An agricultural mowing machine com. prises a cutting mechanism which is mounted on a carrier bar 9 and which can move rearwardly when the cutting mechanism strikes an. obstacle, the rearward movement being restrained by a friction brake. As shown an arm 11 carries a brake plate 1 which cooperates with a brake shoe 13 on the bar 9 and a brake shoe 5 mounted on a lever 4, the shoe being urged against the plate 1 by a spring 3. The lever 4 is connected to a hand-operated cam 6 which is moved to compress the spring 3 and bring the shoe 5 out of contact with the plate 1 to allow the cutting mechanism to be returned to the working position by means of a spring 10. The movement of the cutting mechanism is limited by stops 7 and 8 on the plate 1. The mounting of the eccentric is preferably adjustable so that the pressure of the brake shoe against the plate 1 may be adjusted. |
