<p>A mobile station (240) is operated in a telecommunications system (225) that includes a base station (220) and one or more relay stations (230, 231-235). The mobile station communicates directly with the base station via a first channel. To facilitate selection of a suitable relay station, the mobile station broadcasts a burst (513) for receipt (515) by a plurality of relay stations.
