The present invention is related to an isolated chemolithotrophic bacteria from the Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans species, best known as Wenelen, which is deposited in the Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GMBH, DSMZ (German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures) under the DSM 16786 number; the invention also refers to the use of said bacteria for lixiviating minerals or concentrates of sulfured metallic species, and lixiviation processes based on said bacteria or mixtures containing the same. Unlike common bacteria, the Wenelen DSM 16786 strain has an increased oxidizing activity, particularly with chalcopyrite. Due to the aforementioned explanation, the present bacterium is of great interest for biomining applications. |
