<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pressure detecting unit which can improve the safety of a fixing unit. <P>SOLUTION: The pressure detecting unit of this invention has for instance a fixing unit incorporating a heater unit and a fixing roller, and checks whether the heater unit and the fixing roller are pressed to each other or released from each other. It has a means to obtain the information of the heat capacity of the heater unit and a means to determine whether the heater unit and the fixing roller are pressed to each other or released from each other by utilizing the difference of the heat capacity information changing when pressed or released.
