Halogen-free, flame-retardant polymer foams, in particular molded polystyrene foams, composed of expandable polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene foam sheets (XPS), which comprise, as flame retardant, a phosphorus compound of the general formula (I) where R₁, R₂, and R₃, independently of one another, are H, substituted or unsubstituted C₁-C₁₅-alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted C₁-C₁₅-alkenyl, substituted or unsubstituted C₃-C₈-cycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted C₆-C₁₈-aryl, or substituted or unsubstituted C₇-C₃₀-alkylaryl, or the hydrolysis product or metal salt of a phosphorus compound of the general formula (I), and processes for their production.
