A display device for preventing an over-voltage supplied to a lamp and its control method are provided to facilitate designing of an inverter system by excluding an additional impedance. A lamp is driven to turn on a display device(S401). An AC(Alternating Current) voltage is supplied to the lamp of the display device by using an inverter transformer(S402). The AC voltage supplied to the lamp is sensed by a secondary output winding added to an output terminal of the inverter transformer(S403). The recognized AC voltage is converted into a DC(Direct Current) voltage(S404). The converted DC voltage is compared with a pre-set reference voltage(S405). It is checked whether the converted DC voltage is higher than the pre-set reference voltage(S406). If the DC voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the voltage supplied to the lamp is cut off(S408).
