PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record video signals in a video signal system suited to a recording format in which a recording medium is initialized, when recording video signals of a plurality of video signal systems on the recording medium that is capable of performing recording in a plurality of recording formats. SOLUTION: When a blank disk is loaded into a disk camcoder as an optical disk 111 and a user performs format processing of the blank disk, it is detected whether a camera mode corresponding to the type of format is coincident with a camera mode being set at that point of time. If the camera mode is not coincident, it is called to switch to the camera mode suitable for the type of format, so that format processing can be performed without necessity for the user to consider the combination of the type of format of the blank disk and the camera mode.
