PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyimide resin containing an aliphatic polyimide which is improved in the birefringence in the thickness direction is improved, has excellent solubility, high transparency and a high glass transition temperature; and a production method thereof. SOLUTION: This polyimide resin comprises an unit represented by the general formula (1) and an unit represented by the general formula (2), wherein when the molar fraction of the unit represented by the general formula (1) is expressed as A and the molar fraction of the unit represented by the general formula (2) is expressed as B, an equation: 0.5≤B≤1.0 is satisfied. Further, by controlling the adding speed of a dehydrating agent during a chemical imidation, the above polyimide resin can be produced in a mass production without causing solidification or gelation.
