摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To implement a target vehicle running state of a vehicle equipped with an engine and a multispeed transmission by controlling the engine from the viewpoint of specific fuel consumption optimization and controlling the speed of the transmission appropriately in accordance with the operating state of the engine. <P>SOLUTION: A vehicle running control apparatus 5 has an engine optimizing arithmetic device 5B for controlling the engine 1 with a target driving force computed from following distance information and the like, and a shift point correcting arithmetic device 5C for controlling the transmission 2. The engine optimizing arithmetic device 5B comprises an optimum fuel consumption point calculation means having an optimum specific fuel consumption map, and calculates an optimum engine speed implementing an optimum specific fuel consumption, and an accelerator-opening-equivalent signal. The optimum engine speed is input into the shift point correcting arithmetic device 5C, which in turn performs a PID operation based on the deviation of an actual gear ratio from a target gear ratio to calculate a vehicle speed correction amount.
